HEARD: Why It's Tough to Build Affordable Housing in Rural Areas

HEARD:

A barrier to building affordable, especially multifamily, housing in rural areas ... sprinkler systems.

Many wells can't provide the quantity of water or pressure needed to run the systems.

On steep hills with limited firetruck access, the $7,000 cost per apartment/condo/house make sense. In multifamily units, the cost to get a  system that can meet the water and pumping needed, is expensive, making affordability a challenge.
